ANSWER THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION AFTER SESSION SIX

After completing the online session five and all of the homework, please return to this post and answer the Essential                         Question for Session Five by posting a COMMENT to this blog entry.



How will you assess all the facets of the cycle or should you?

Things: perception, knowledge, skill, adaptation
Processes:  collaborating, trusting in minds’ eye awareness, 
questioning, judging, tinkering, experimenting, editing, polishing, performing.

  1. McCarthy (2006) identified the heart of assessment as being “how are my students doing” (p.89)? Barkley & Major (2016) identified assessment as “the way teachers gauge for ourselves and for others whether and how well learning has happened” (p.9). Assessment is a necessary component in the classroom. However, it is important that teachers utilize the appropriate assessment at the right time. Every assessment that is given can not be a test or a quiz. Lynch (2019) noted it is the job of the teacher to select the most appropriate assessment for a subject matter. 4MAT is framework that requires the educator to utilize left & right brain activities and instruction methods to teach the student. Multiple forms of assessment help strengthen the activities and methods being utilized and encourages the students to use whole brain thinking. “Simply setting up conditions for active learning is not sufficient…” educators need to know whether students are learning the information. Knowing whether learning goals are being met is achieved through assessment. Not one type of assessment, but multiple forms of assessment.

  2. How will you assess all the facets of the cycle or should you?

    I will try to assess all facets of the cycle by pushing myself out of my comfort zone and embracing various areas in the cycle. While I know it is “a stretch to master the entire cycle”, it is “well worth the effort” (McCarthy, 2006, p. 15). If I find it too difficult to master, and I oversee creating a team, I will make sure there are individuals on the team whose strengths are my weaknesses. One day, I hope to conquer the cycle.
