What is the conceptualizing process and how will you do it?

  1. The process of conceptualization identifies the major concept (significant idea) of a lesson and then uses it as a building block to help learners identify the other ideas located in the lesson. Through the process of conceptualizing, students create a bridge that leads from the content (other ideas) to the concept (significant idea) and are able to take the knowledge they have obtained and build connections to both the material being covered and real life scenarios.
I plan to incorporate the conceptualization process in my lesson planning. Many teachers can testify to hearing the question, “Why do I need to know this if it has nothing to do with my future career choice?” Showing students, the significance of what they are learning and its application to their daily lives is more powerful than simply saying it is important. We have heard the saying “actions speak louder than words,” and when it comes to the inquisitive minds of students this statement resounds like a church bell in a steeple.

  2. "...uses it as a building block." Yes, exactly. Your rationalization for conceptualizing based on students not seeing the value and meaning in the new learning for them is what 4MAT hopes to change. Well said Tomesha.

  3. What is the conceptualizing process and how will you do it?
The conceptualizing process is the process of finding the big idea, the deeper meaning, the connection, and the hook to the new learning and to the learner (McCarthy, 2016). Conceptualizing process requires a lot of thinking, asking questions and examining the ideas around the topic presented. Even though the conceptualization process is the same, however, the concepts will differ among individual teachers teaching the same topic (McCarthy, 2016).
How I will do it? Depends on the standard, the topic and the purpose of the learning. I think, it is important to brainstorm, list all the concepts and collaborate with others who have experience in teaching the topic.
